Considering The Last of Us had both a single-player story campaign and a multiplayer option, most gamers were expecting The Last of Us 2 to be the same. The original The Last of Us offered a multiplayer mode through its Factions DLC collection bundle, which allows players to lead a group of survivors and compete with other factions for survival.

Very little is yet known about The Last of Us multiplayer project. It is planned to be an online experience, following the legacy of the Factions mode present in the first game of the series that was removed for Part II. Reportedly, this new game will also be free-to-play, with monetization models offering extra content for players after launch.
